ABOUT MIKE LITTREL

Mike Littrel is the dynamic President and CEO of X3 Sports, a premier health and fitness facility renowned for its blend of martial arts, mixed martial arts, and strength conditioning classes. A lifelong athlete and former competitive sportsman, Mike attributes his significant life achievements to the discipline and tenacity developed through rigorous sports activities. Graduating with a business degree focused on real estate in 2001, he initially pursued a career in commercial real estate.

However, Mike’s passion for fitness acted as a mental anchor during his post-college transition, eventually leading him to train at a tough pro-fighter boxing gym. This intimidating yet rewarding experience laid the groundwork for his future ventures. Mike’s career took a pivotal turn when he helped a client expand a martial arts studio, eventually partnering in the business. This studio offered kickboxing, boxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, setting a strong foundation for X3 Sports.

Mike further expanded his influence by training elite NFL players in boxing during their off-seasons, pioneering an enjoyable and effective alternative workout routine for professional athletes. His leadership has been instrumental in creating an inclusive, engaging environment in X3 Sports’ multiple locations. The gym’s success is founded on understanding client goals, personalizing experiences, and fostering a supportive team culture.

Mike’s unique approach combines rigorous, varied training with a focus on community and personal development. As he oversees the growth of X3 Sports, now approaching its sixth location, Mike remains dedicated to changing people’s self-perception from unfit individuals to athletes, all while maintaining a positive attitude and enduring passion for fitness.

Mike hails from a large family, with six siblings, and is a proud owner of two dogs, Tater Tot (a French Bulldog) and Jackson (a 16-year-old Cocker Spaniel). You can learn more about Mike and his work at x3sports.com.

QUOTES

  1. On Enjoying Fitness: “When people genuinely enjoy what they’re doing—like boxing or kickboxing—they’re more inclined to stay dedicated. It becomes less about dragging themselves to a workout and more about looking forward to it. That shift in mindset is where real, lasting change begins.”
  2. Consistency in Business and Fitness: “Consistency is key, whether you’re talking about maintaining a gym routine or running a business. It’s not about doing things perfectly every single day but showing up and doing something, even if it’s small. That accumulation of effort is what leads to success.”
  3. Creating Welcoming Environments: “One of our top priorities is to make sure every person who walks into our gyms feels welcome. We assume they’re intimidated, and we go above and beyond to greet everyone warmly. It’s about building relationships and making people feel valued, and that reduces cancellations significantly.”
  4. Growth and Challenges: “Growing involves not just logistical and tactical tasks but ensuring quality through good people management. We filter out those who aren’t fully committed through challenging processes. Our goal is sustainable, strategic growth by partnering with the right people, not just rapid expansion.”
  5. Support for New Hires: “In those first 30 days, it’s critical to make the experience realistic and supportive for new hires. Have senior personnel or buddies to help them avoid feeling lost, assist with basic tasks, and communicate core values. That support system helps them integrate smoothly and stay committed long-term.”

LESSONS LEARNED

Making Exercise Fun and Engaging

Mike Littrel emphasizes the significance of finding joy in fitness to ensure long-term commitment and success. Observing that many people view gym workouts as unenjoyable tasks, Mike suggests integrating fun and engaging activities like boxing. When individuals enjoy their workouts, they are more likely to stick to their routines, leading to cumulative benefits like improved fitness, mental sharpness, and self-defense skills. By transforming exercise into an exciting and enjoyable experience, Mike’s approach increases the likelihood of consistent gym attendance and overall well-being.

Supportive Onboarding Enhances Employee Retention

Mike discusses the critical role of a supportive onboarding process in enhancing employee retention. The first 30 days are crucial for setting realistic expectations and providing necessary support. Having senior staff or ‘buddies’ available to assist new hires with basic tasks and understanding core business values such as warrior spirit and champion mindset can prevent feelings of being lost. By fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, businesses can improve employee engagement and retention from the very beginning.

Evolution of the Fitness Industry

Mike outlines the dynamic evolution within the fitness industry. Transitioning from generic big-box gym classes to more specialized boutique fitness centers like Orange Theory, 9Round, and F45, the industry has seen a significant shift. This specialized approach caters to passionate fitness enthusiasts seeking variety and personalized experiences. Recognizing these trends can help business owners tap into the growing market of fitness franchises, catering to an increasingly health-conscious population with diverse fitness needs.

Proactive Hiring Strategies

Mike underscores the importance of proactive hiring and maintaining a candidate pipeline. Emphasizing continuous recruitment, even in the absence of immediate needs, helps avoid panicked hiring when a vacancy arises. Selling potential candidates on the organization’s vision and growth opportunities is crucial for attracting top talent. Mike shares how evaluating candidates based on personality over skills ensures hiring individuals who align with the company culture and are willing to learn, ultimately contributing to business growth and stability.

  3. Prioritize Relationship-Building in Gyms
